Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, one of the many in the Blue Ribbon family, has had a lot of prestige and hype around it for quite awhile. Worth it? Well, here’s my long circuitous answer that will hopefully be helpful nonetheless.
The atmosphere is a little too stuffy and loud. I felt like I was in a club yelling at my family and friends to hear them across the table. Too many snobby rich people thinking they can just bump into you without saying sorry. Our service was subpar, and the water just slabbed things onto the table like pieces of meat, as well was seemed annoyed when he had to clear out the table for the next course. It was as if just being there was God’s gift to the earth, as if they were “allowing” us to be here. So that, not so good. HOWEVER, I will go back and I will still eat here. Why? The food is excellent. I’d say the sushi is overpriced, but it is good quality, and the pricing is just a product of being right by Columbus Circle. The actual hot appetizers and entrees are totally reasonably priced, and everything (including the expensive sushi) is well-executed, flavorful, has depth, and all just dee-lish-ous. So, Blue RIbbon, you’re a little too bougie and snobby for my liking, but it’s something I’m willing to look past for the sake of good food. I’ll also go again if I get to see Benji from Pitch Perfect again. Yes, he was there, and yes he had the magic in him.
What I tried:
Hamachi Tataki: simple, savory, yet refreshing with the quality and lightness of yellowtail.
Ceviche: if they have it – it’s crisp, light, citrusy, with a depth and complexity of flavors and textures that I totally enjoyed.
Blue RIbbon Fried Chicken: crispy and flavorful on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside; what else could you ask for? Oh, I thought of something – their wasabi-honey dipping sauce that comes on the side. Amazing.
Oxtail Fried Rice: ORDER ORDER ORDER. It’s my favorite item on the menu. To me, this oxtail fried rice has got that amazing umami flavor that makes your mouth water and brain go haywire to immediately want more after your first bite. It is just absolute heaven in your mouth.
Several Sushi Combos: Not the most earth-shattering, delicious sushi I’ve ever had, but it’s always quality and satisfying.
That’s all for now. 🙂
